In a rare alert over air pollution, state officials declared Wednesday that air quality in the Twin Cities area had become unhealthy for some people and may remain so today depending on weather.

Rick Strassman, supervisor of the air-monitoring unit for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), suggested that people with respiratory diseases, such as asthma, remain indoors in air-conditioned spaces.

He also recommended that parents keep children from playing strenuously outdoors during the day and that athletes schedule outdoor exercise for early in the morning or late in the evening.
