Jun. 28--MOUNT HOLLY, N.C.--Freightliner LLC will lay off 475 workers effective July 6 at its Mount Holly plant in Gaston County, becoming the region's latest casualty of the economic slowdown.
Wednesday, the Portland, Ore.-based company blamed the move on difficult market conditions in the North American truck-manufacturing industry. Some 1,120workers will be affected worldwide.
"We regret that this action is necessary," said Freightliner spokesman Chris Brandt, "but this is one of the most challenging truck markets ever."
