WASHINGTON, D.C.-The cherry blossoms have come and gone, and the bloom in Jim Wright's checks seems to be fading as fast. The House ethics committee has decided that there is enough evidence to investigate the House Speaker on 69 violations of "the code of official conduct or other House rules." The committee decision is the equivalent of an indictment, and hearings will begin soon.
The Speaker charges that he is a victim of shifting moral standards, and indeed the actual counts the committee has decided to look into are relatively petty. Essentially they boil down to an acceptance of gifts from one constituent and an attempt to avoid House limits on income ...
