AS, I'm sure, in a lot of homes around the world, there's a touch of sadness in ours today. We feel as though a fond uncle or much-loved cousin just died, someone guaranteed to make us laugh and laugh again, though all his stories were old.
It wasn't an uncle, it was Jack Lemmon. And, though, like most people, we never met him, we all feel we knew him intimately.
In some strange, transmutable way, Jack Lemmon, he of the round, American, putty face, and the permanently worried, put-upon expression, almost seemed to know how we see ourselves.
That was his genius.
He studied us and made us identify with him. ...
