Spectrum leaves staid business to produce movies

After some 18 years in the sedate contract and health film business, Spectrum Films of Carlsbad is plunging into the risky waters of independent feature movie making.

Spectrum's three principals, Robert Turner, Lee Foerster and Ron Smith, are trying to raise $4 million to produce "The Northern Lights," based on a 1987 coming-of-age novel about a Canadian teenager growing up in the 1950s.
