DALLAS _ Tony Gwynn assured the other day that he was merely retiring at season's end. He wasn't dying, he said.
But his breed is.
He and Cal Ripken.
Troy Aikman and John Elway.
Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.
Bobby Clarke and Bob Gainey.
The Oneosauruses, you could call them. For together, what made their careers most remarkable weren't just their Hall of Fame play or their record-setting statistics. It was that they each spent every second of their fabulous careers in one town on one team for one set of fans.
