WHAT HAPPENED TO MIDDLE MANAGEMENT?

AT&T, Exxon, CBS and scores of other major New York-based companies are among hundreds of companies nationwide which participated in the wave of major corporate restructurings in the past several years. The elimination of hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of middle management positions was a common denominator in their strategies.

The strategy seems to have paid off. Judging by the early results, Corporate America can, indeed, survive with a lot fewer people managing it.
