Corruption in Iran often is linked with powerful extended families. One of those about which there have been numerous complaints is the large Hashemi family from Kerman Province. They are wealthy from pistachio-farming and land- owning activities before the revolution, Ayatollah Ali-Akbar Hashemi- Rafsanjani went from being a close ally of the Father of the Revolution to being a two-term president and now chairman of the Expediency Council, and other Hashemis are active in every branch of the government.
