IN 1999, BASEBALL DIGEST published an interesting article by George Vass that analyzed "20th Century All-Overlooked Stars." At first base Vass picked Jake Daubert, who played from 1910 to 1924, for his first team. For his second team, Vass picked James Barton "Mickey" Vernon, the longtime standout for the Washington Senators, who played from 1939 through 1960.
