THE position of the bowler-hatted Orangemen might look dogged and morally impressive, but it is politically untenable. David Trimble's resignation should have come long ago. The Unionists took their stand on the issue of whether the IRA would give up its cache of weapons and high explosives. Everyone knew that they would never do this. The whole of the Northern Ireland Assembly has been predicated on a falsehood, with the huge majority of Unionists disapproving of their party's willingness to compromise with the enemy.
