Hamburg landfill clean-up under way.

Clean-up of the former Moorfleeter Brack landfill in the German city of Hamburg has begun with the use of a remote-controlled excavator to remove some of the most highly contaminated soil. Work on a 600 m2 'hot spot', includes the clean-up of contaminants such as chlorobenzenes, lindane and dioxins, and is expected to cost around DM3.6 million ($1.6 million). It will be completed in summer 2001. Clean-up costs for the 1.7 ha site will be about DM20 million and be complete by the end of 2002.
