WADDESDON, England -- Oscar de la Renta kneels down and plucks a tiny sprig of green from a flower bed at Waddesdon Manor, a huge country estate 90 minutes north of London owned by Lord Jacob Rothschild. He holds it up to his nose and sniffs.
"Chamomile," de la Renta says, smiling his broad smile. "I love the smell. It's important to have scent in a garden."
De la Renta has the right to give a tour, since he created this garden on the parterre outside the manor house. Rothschild asked de la Renta to design the garden as part of Waddesdon's goal of reinventing the technique of carpet bedding, which the Rothschild family developed in the 19th century. ...
