With the newest census showing a population of 21.2 million in the area, New York retains its bragging rights as the biggest apple in the United States, a good 29% heftier than runner-up Los Angeles. Its growth has been helped by an influx of immigrants, especially from China, the Dominican Republic, India, Bangladesh, Jamaica and the former Soviet Union. However, the city's 8.4% population gain over the past decade looks paltry compared with growth of 40%-plus in the Sun Belt and as high as 83.3% for Las Vegas.
