Elk Grove Village is the only town in Illinois that forces stores to card everybody who buys alcohol, but that apparently hasn't stopped minors from getting liquor somewhere else.
Elk Grove Village police arrested 103 minors for drinking and/or having alcohol since the mandatory carding law took effect Jan. 1. There were 95 arrests during the first six months of 2000.
Whether Elk Grove Village is aggressively attacking the underage drinking problem or merely making it harder for legitimate adults to buy alcohol depends on whom you talk to.
