FOR almost a century it seemed to be an unwritten rule of German breeding: no mare shall breed more than one winner of the Deutsches Derby. Six managed to produce both a winner and a runner-up, and there was even one mare-Mineral-who managed to deliver a dead-heater in Hamburg (Schwindler) plus a winner at Epsom (Kisber).
In a country whose mare population was relatively small, and where major studs tended to dominate with the products of a few consistently successful families, it seemed odd that the double should prove so elusive. But ...
