WINNIPEG, MB, July 5, 2001 (RESNEWS) - Escalating energy costs and the high price of hay have decimated the alfalfa producing industry in southern Alberta, one of Canada's largest alfalfa producing regions, say trade sources.

Although Canadian alfalfa production isn't nearly as large or lucrative as wheat or canola production, Canada is one of the world's largest alfalfa producing countries. More than 80% of Canadian-processed alfalfa products are exported, with Japan, Taiwan and South Korea the largest export markets.
