Reducing Setup and Handling: The Big Challenge
Increasing productivity and reducing operating expenses are two of the primary goals of manufacturing. While many advances in the speed and efficiency of machine tools and cutting tools have reduced machining times, excessive setup is still a problem.
One production method that shows promise is palletizing the workpieces. By mounting the workpieces on a series of individual pallets, the time required for workpiece change-over is cut from several minutes to just a few seconds. When a workpiece must be transferred between machine tools for subsequent operations, the change-over times are still excessive.
