It began a decade ago, as a mission impossible, in a harsh climate of hostility and almost daily confrontations. It is nearing completion, in the first balmy days of spring, as one the greatest public works projects ever undertaken in France, and its opponents have fallen silent.
On June 10, the TGV Mediterranee will start running: a high-speed train whizzing along 140 miles of new tracks at top speeds in excess of 185 mph. It will link Marseille, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, to Paris in three hours flat and connect with other high-speed train lines already in service to bring London within seven hours of Marseille and Brussels within five.
