Local cardiologists are intrigued by the use of a self-contained artificial heart in a patient in Louisville, but they caution that a truly ''bionic'' heart that would eliminate the need for organ transplants is still years away.
''This is just the tip of the iceberg,'' said Dr. Lynne Wagoner, medical director of University of Cincinnati's cardiac transplant program. ''It's not going to be the answer in the immediate future, but this certainly shows great promise and the potential to be a fantastic treatment.''
