Syria's loneliest summit
KING HASSAN of Morocco called it the summit of unity and reconciliation. The gathering of Arab kings, emirs and presidents in Casablanca this week did not quite live up to its name. Furious disagreements between President Hafez Assad of Syria and a moderate front led by Iraq and Egypt forced the summit, planned only for May 23rd and 24th, into a third bad-tempered day. The summiteers argued in closed session deep into Wednesday night. The final communique, expected on Thursday morning, was delayed (beyond The Economist's deadline).
