Facing possible fines and other penalties, Warrenville officials are hoping residents will open their doors to inspectors to check sump pump lines for proper connection.

City leaders are going so far as to offer to pay for reconnection if the sump pumps are illegally tapped into the city's sanitary sewer system.

"Having your sump pump going into the sanitary sewer is illegal and we feel that we're helping people who probably didn't know it was happening," said Mayor Vivian Lund.

Mike Smith, the city's utilities superintendent, said the sump pumps are flooding the city's sanitary sewer ...
