A couple of years ago, back when business-to-business e-marketplaces started cropping up, the buzz was all about public exchanges, often set up by industry consortia, where lots of buyers and even more suppliers were supposed to get together and conduct their business online. While the buzz continued, after a while it wasn't always positive. The initial push towards public trading exchanges was to get groups of buyers together so they could get better deals from suppliers.
