Is this shaping up to be the next round in a heavyweight bout, or an episode of dueling attorneys? Stamps.com has sued Pitney Bowes for alleged patent infringement of its Internet postage technology.

Stamps.com's suit, filed in Federal Court in the Central District of California in Los Angeles on Thursday, is supposed to cover four patents involving work done by Salim Kara, founder of E-Stamp.

In April, Stamps.com acquired 31 patents and trademarks for $7.5 million from E-Stamp, which bailed out of the Internet postage business in November after failing to make much headway.
