End-user use of Microsoft's Windows Media has steadily eaten away at the once-dominant market share held by RealNetworks and its media formats, according to new figures released on Monday by Media Metrix.
If the market share shift keeps up, in another couple of months Microsoft could become dominant in web-based media for the first time, repeating the same pattern and using the same strategy that unseated Netscape from browser dominance.
Media Metrix didn't try to analyze why Microsoft has been able to steal serious market share over the past six months. Analysts, however, attributed it mainly to Redmond's marketing efforts, rather than to any ...
