In an interview with Shaman's Drum editor Timothy White, psychologist Ralph Metzner, PhD, talked about his long-time interest in the creative, spiritual, and psychotherapeutic possibilities of psychedelics, specifically botanical psychedelics. Dr. Metzner worked for many years with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert in their research of LSD and psilocybin until political and health concerns caused him to look for non-drug methods for transforming consciousness in the late 1960s. He eventually came across information about botanical psychedelics, such as ayahuasca, peyote, and iboga, that have been used by indigenous people for centuries.
