Jul. 11--ALBERT LEA, Minn.--A welder cutting metal in a storage room of boxes accidentally started the fire that caused extensive damage to an Albert Lea meatpacking plant, idling up to 700 workers in the southern Minnesota city's biggest blaze, fire investigators said Tuesday.
The fire was discovered about 5 p.m. Sunday and burned into Monday. State fire marshal investigators were able to enter the damaged building around noon Tuesday, said City Manager Paul Sparks. Structural engineers employed by the plant's owner, Farmland Industries of Kansas City, were also ...
