Jul. 10--The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles issued its annual 60-page report on 2000 traffic statistics.
The report was not good for Charlotte County or the state. In 2000, there were 39 people killed in vehicle, pedestrian, motorcycle or bicycle crashes, the highest figure ever for our county.
The report stated there were 1,587 crashes investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol, Sheriff and Punta Gorda Police of which 196 were alcohol-related, or 12.4 percent. Of those 39 killed, 14 were alcohol related (36 percent). It's amazing that ...
