Mexico became the 11th most populous country in the world during the past decade, with its population increasing by 16.1 million between 1990 and 2000. Recent statistics published by the government's statistics agency (Instituto Nacional de Estadisticas, Geografia e Informatica, INEGI) indicated that Mexico's population had swelled to 97.4 million as of last year.
"In the second half of this year we will reach 100 million, taking into account the population-growth rate," said INEGI President Gilberto Calvillo.
