JEFFERSON CITY _ The University of Missouri got a $35 million commitment from taxpayers Thursday to build a new basketball arena, a planned 16,000-seat facility that could hold games by 2005.
In addition, and to appease academic concerns, Gov. Bob Holden also released $1 million of capital improvement money for a new $60 million life sciences building on the Columbia campus.
MU officials, supporters and politicians watched the governor sign legislation authorizing state to issue revenue bonds to pay for the arena's construction.
But the governor said he wanted to make sure sports was not the only winner.
