An Added Risk for Autopsy Pathologists
The risk of needle puncture or other penetrating injury during autopsy is well documented.[1,2] In addition, autopsy pathologists are at risk of contracting various diseases, such as hepatitis or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), if cut or stuck while performing an autopsy on an infected patient.[3] It has been reported that infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the leading cause of death in US adults aged 25 to 44 years, and intravenous drug abuse is the second most frequently reported risk behavior associated with HIV infection.[4] Intravenous drug addicts with HIV are usually long-term drug users ...
