When Julien Macdonald was named women's wear designer of Givenchy last March, few had ever heard of him. "Who is this Jack Macdonald?" asked one French fashion editor when she heard the news. The world will soon find out. Last week Macdonald received NEWSWEEK in his new office, a nondescript cubbyhole in the venerable old house of couture. "Is that Marlene Dietrich?" asked the 28-year-old Welshman, looking at a photo of the icon in top hat and tails tacked to his office wall. He sighed. "I love what she does there, with masculinity and femininity."
