WINTHROP -- Atop Sun Mountain, late afternoon sunshine filtered through a heavy haze that partly obscured distant hillsides of beige, brown and shades of green.
Children splashed in a pool at Sun Mountain Lodge, overlooking the Methow Valley, where vacationers filled up three-fourths of the rooms.
On the valley floor below, tourists walked the wooden boardwalks amid the smell of smoke while drivers hunted for parking spots on the main street of Winthrop, an Old West-style town of about 380 people.
