Facing death challenges families, whatever the surrounding circumstances. This qualitative analysis of transcripts of family interviews describes 21 family members' experiences of facing the death of a loved one who died following withdrawal of a ventilator. It describes family members' perceptions of the situation, of their needs and of elements of care that were helpful to them as they interacted with physicians and nurses. Families described both technological and psychosocial caring behaviors as important. Technological caring includes physical care, ventilator management and managing patients' discomfort.
