World iron-ore production last year reached a new record of 938 Mt, 8% higher than in 1999 and surpassing the production in the previous record year of 1997 by 1.5%. The world trade in iron ore also reached a new peak, with exports totalling 488 Mt, 11% higher than the previous year. Australia and Brazil continued to outpace their rivals in terms of exports, and their combined share of world trade reached 66.7% in 2000. On the other side of the market, there were record imports of iron ore by South Korea and Taiwan, and China's share of total imports reached 28%.
