Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine age and gender differences in children's self-appraisal of ability in physical education and to determine how those estimates relate to their motivational intentions and perceptions of control. Children from Grades Three, Five, and Eight and their physical education teachers participated in this study. Results indicated there was an age by gender interaction for children's accuracy of self-appraisal of ability. Eight to nine year old boys overestimated their ability more so than 8 to 9 year old girls, while 13 to 14 year old girls overestimated their ability more so than 13 to 14 year old boys.
