NEW YORK -- As a country gets ready to inaugurate a new president after a lengthy battle, the U.S. EPA and General Electric Co. (GE) are waiting for the public comment period to end on EPA's controversial proposal to clean up the Hudson River's polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) through dredging, a project that has been more lengthy than recent political events.

The plan, announced in December 2000, was abandoned originally in 1984 when, according to Ann Rychlenski, public affairs specialist in EPA's Region 2 office, it was decided that the technology available could not clean up the river without causing further damage.
