Somehow, Cecil B. Demille managed to get the reputation as the director of epic movies. Yet, even a glance at the resume of David Lean makes such a claim ludicrous. No one--no one--has ever consistently used the screen like he did for lush, sweeping cinematic panoramas while engrossing the audience with complex characters that made his films so much more than mere spectacle. A trio of recent releases from Columbia TriStar Home Video provides ample evidence to back up this contention.
