Macau--On December 20, 1999, the small Portuguese colony on the Chinese mainland just south of Hong Kong, reverted to China. The territory has a population of 435,000, of whom 30,000 are Catholics under Bishop Domingos Lam Ka-Tseung.
Although less than 10 per cent of the population, the Catholics conduct over 50 per cent of the schools (39 schools with 42,300 students, grades 1-12) and some 27 institutions providing social services.
