Jul. 16--Thirty years ago, Walter Robb, then a General Electric Co. executive in Wisconsin, could have used a mentor to advise him on buying a technology from GE and spinning off his own company.
He didn't do it, opting instead to relocate to the Capital Region to head GE's Corporate Research & Development Center. The technology he didn't buy -- a membrane used to develop artificial lungs -- went on to become a standard in the medical industry.
The chance to pioneer a company -- and make a nice profit -- "was totally beyond my comprehension back then," Robb said. ...
