Airbus list prices increased by fewer than 9 percent between 1999-2001, managing to remain substantially below the near 11 percent recorded by Boeing for the same period.

With still rising production rates, the manufacturers should be reaping the rewards of greater efficiency. The amortized development costs for aircraft in production should have been largely paid off, although spending on new projects remains high. Both manufacturers are making savings with only part being passed onto customers. Boeing for example reported much-improved margins for 2001. Such improvements fail to rein back increases in list prices.
