Jul. 18--Business was looking good this spring at Farmland Industries' big pork processing plant in Albert Lea.
Kansas City-based Farmland, one of America's biggest cooperatives, had recalled 100 workers from layoffs, hired others and was planning to take on still more. The company was modernizing its aging factory.
Then, 10 days ago, disaster struck. A mammoth fire destroyed much of the plant. Nobody was seriously injured, but the impact on the company and its employees, and on the 18,000 residents of Albert Lea, will be far-reaching.
