MARTINEZ, Calif. _ The county will join a major planning effort to determine where housing should be allowed and where endangered species are protected in Eastern Contra Costa.
A year ago, supervisors refused to participate in the habitat conservation planning after some landowners voiced fears it would lead to development restrictions.
Supervisors reversed themselves Tuesday with a 4-1 vote; Gayle Uilkema of Lafayette voted no.
Board members said it's important for the county to have a voice in shaping a plan that is going to be drafted anyway by cities, park districts and water districts in East County.
