When the PGA Tour unveiled its sweeping new TV contract this week, a mega-pact worth an estimated $850 million, The Golf Channel got a big piece of the action. But it wasn't exactly the action that initially was sought.
The network was left out in the cold in terms of live PGA Tour coverage in favor of the major networks, which used their financial wherewithal to elbow aside the bid of the Orlando-based cable outlet.
Instead of televising parts of as many as 14 PGA Tour events, as The Golf Channel has done under the existing contract, it will televise up to 18 Buy.com Tour events beginning in 2003 when the new contract takes effect.
