With the digital audio workstation (DAW), access to recorded material is immediate, and modifying the relative position of tracks is simply a matter of specifying an offset or "dragging" sounds along the timeline. It's all a far cry from waiting for tapes to rewind, re-dubbing tracks to move them in time, and worrying about the generation loss that occurs each time tracks and sub-mixes are recorded in analogue.
