With rampant safety concerns, Americans almost unanimously favor mandatory labels on genetically modified foods, according to a recent poll by ABCNEWS.com, and most say they would utilize those labels to avoid the food. Barely more than a third of the public believes that genetically modified foods are safe to eat. Rather, 52% believe such foods are unsafe, while an additional 13% are unsure about them.
Almost everyone (93%) says the federal government should require labels on food saying whether it has been genetically modified, or "bio-engineered" (this poll used both phrases).
