The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority was scrambling yesterday to mount a defense against a U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission probe into the coverup of Big Dig cost overruns, as the public tab for agency legal bills promised to soar to new heights.
"We're not going to run away," said Turnpike Authority Chairman David Forsberg. "We will tell our story to the SEC."
The SEC's blanket implication of the Pike in the 1999 coverup sent shock waves through Beacon Hill, as public officials expressed grave concerns about the agency's credibility suffering permanent damage.
"If the Turnpike Authority gets fined, that would only complicate (Big Dig) ...
