The preacher waited. So here
was Aquinas, scholastically rational,
extending his learned hand to the stillborn
and beaten, the unwashed still deserving
of inferior blessedness.
My half man's damned
and literal mind demanded
a structure then, some bare walls
in a not disagreeable pastel,
a landscape of plain hills and modest flowers.
This was not a class
in comparative religions though,
but pure fundamental catechism,
and by what blinkered light I kept on
asking questions, I could not say today.
"Ask a Catholic!," my good man
of God roared, meaning
ask a whore, ask an infidel, ask a fool.
