Ill. Votes Start-Up Funds For CHIP Plan

A state-subsidized comprehensive health insurance plan to provide coverage for the medically uninsurable in Illinois is expected to become operational in mid-April following recent approval by the Illinois General Assembly of $5.8 million in start-up funds for the plan.

Legislation creating the plan--called CHIP for comprehensive health insurance plan--was enacted Feb. 9, 1987. The two-year wait for CHIP to become operational was caused by legal, political, and funding difficulties, a representative of the state explained.
