In recent years, corporations have spent millions of dollars on something called brand management as a way to distinguish themselves from competitors. In fact, what they are doing is hardly new.
Branding has been around since the ancient Egyptians, whose craftsmen stamped their insignias on bricks to show that some were more skillfully made than others.
Many Detroit businesses, both long gone and still thriving, used logos, hood ornaments or catchy tag lines to promote their images. Several of those icons have endured to become part of the Motown culture.
