WASHINGTON -- The nation's capital is the country's fifth-largest supermarket market, with total sales of $8.86 billion, according to Sales and Marketing Management.
The region is dominated by Landover, Md.-based Giant Food Inc., now a unit of Ahold USA Inc. Giant, with 116 stores in the area, holds a 37% share. Safeway Inc., with 99 outlets, trails distantly with 20% of the market. Other supermarket players in the capitol include Shoppers Food Warehouse/Metro, the Food Lion chain of Delhaize America and the Fresh Fields unit of Whole Foods Market Inc.
Giant is estimated by Food World to have had sales in the Washington, D.C., area of around $3.07 ...
